Tribal Archaeologist

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Historic Preservation Department has an immediate opening for a Tribal Archaeologist in Durant, OK. This opportunity is available until November 14, 2018 at 11:59 P.M.

This position is a field/office position that is focused on performing cultural resource surveys, background studies, report writing, cultural & historical research, and community outreach and education.  Field work regularly includes working in extreme weather/field conditions doing strenuous physical labor, navigating the natural environment, using advanced GPS equipment, and traveling through Southeastern Oklahoma. In-office work includes doing research on Choctaw history, culture, and archaeology utilizing oral, ethnographic, archaeological, GIS resources as well as working with the Choctaw community to document and protect archaeological, historic, and sacred sites. This position requires flexibility to travel out of state for trainings and conferences that include overnight stays, work related travel expenses are paid by Choctaw Nation.

We are looking for applicants that meet the secretary of interior’s archaeology and historic preservation professional qualification standards with either a Master’s degree in archaeology with field school experience, applicant must be on the Register of Professional Archaeologist (RPA), and have intermediate technology skills to do research, report writing, and interacting with a geographic information system (GIS) and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS).
