Term Field Crew Archaeological Technician
June 2018 - November 2018

This field crew technician position will be a minimum of six months, with the possibility of extension. Start and end dates may be flexible for the right candidate.

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute) is seeking a motivated individual to fill the term position of Archaeological Technician. This is a non-supervisory, fulltime, six-month position with Lassen Volcanic National Park (LVNP) and Sierra Institute staff. Successful candidates must meet the minimum Secretary of Interior Qualified Archaeologist
requirements. The position will be responsible for assisting LVNP’s cultural resource program with National Historic Preservation Act and Archeological Resource Protection Act
implementation and compliance. The candidate will work on survey projects in LVNP. Other tasks and duties may be assigned as needed to fulfill project work associated with our funding
source.

Responsibilities:
• Conduct investigations and reporting on cultural resource projects for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other historic preservation legislation;
• Conduct surveys, site identification, and evaluations using standard archaeological and historic preservation techniques;
• Prepare site, project, and evaluation reports;
• Provide data, rationale, policy and legal compliance in making recommendations to the Sierra Institute and LVNP management;
• Assist staff in identifying, evaluating, and monitoring cultural resources, and consult and coordinate for restoration projects;
• Assume a leadership role with lower-grade archeologist and undergraduate intern field crew members;
• May review LVNP projects for impacts to cultural resources;
• May provide archeological monitoring for large scale construction activities.

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field;
• Minimum of one year combined archaeological field experience at an accredited archaeological field school, professional cultural resources firm, or government agency;
• Experience performing archaeological survey;
• Ability to meet deadlines;
• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work well on simultaneous tasks;
• Competent at taking detailed project notes;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Competent at collecting field data using Trimble GPS;
• Basic understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other historic preservation laws;
• A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work in rugged mountain environments;
• Some overnight camping in the backcountry;
• Must be able to walk 8-10 miles a day with field pack and ample water, over rough terrain in variable weather conditions which likely will include high temperatures in summer months;
• A portion of the duties require working outdoors under extreme temperature in rugged terrain. Potentially strenuous physical effort associated with hiking during archaeological
reconnaissance and surveys, such as climbing steep slopes, and physical labor such as stooping, bending, carrying loads of 45 pounds may be required. Some sedentary work is performed in an office setting.

Compensation:
• Compensation is $20 per hour. Medical, dental, and life insurance benefits are not included. Sierra Institute field crew employees are eligible for paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave. Housing is available for a fee in Mineral, CA at Lassen Volcanic NP headquarters. The incumbent will be required to pass an agency background check in order to access LVNP vehicles and computer systems.
