The Jeffrey L. Brown Institute of Archaeology (JLBIA) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga seeks a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor with Cultural Resource Management experience beginning August 1^st, 2019. The applicant will serve as Director of the JLBIA and must demonstrate the ability to initiate independent research, obtain external funding, and support the academic mission of the Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies.  

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will possess the following:

• A Masters degree in anthropology or archaeology required; Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, or related field preferred.
• Be RPA certified.
• At least 5 years of fieldwork and technical writing experience in cultural resource management showing an increased level of responsibility.
• Proficiency in GIS applications related to archaeological research, in addition to experience with one or more of the following: remote sensing, lithic analysis, faunal or floral analysis, or human osteology.
• Ability to teach at the college level. The Department will be particularly receptive to candidates who can involve undergraduate students in field and laboratory work as a way of promoting active and experiential learning.
• Research and field experience in archaeology; Southeastern U.S. desirable.
• Successful grant applications or funding.
• A proven record of scholarly activity and engagement, and promise of future work in the field.

Responsibilities:

Once hired, candidates for this position will be expected to:

• Direct archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery investigations.
• Prepare budgets, proposals, technical reports and publications. This requires an applied knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA and a working familiarity of other environmental statutes and regulations.
• Supervise, mentor, and support students/staff in all aspects of their responsibilities, including on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Teach one anthropology course per semester to support the academic mission of the Department of Social, Cultural, and Justice Studies.
• Grow the JLBIA’s market presence in the Southeast.
• Organize and manage curation of artifact assemblages.
• Explore research partnerships with various CRM-related agencies and organizations.
• Engage in assisting the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional goals as specified in UTC’s Strategic Plan, including a demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Starting salary: $40,000.
