Research Archaeologist _ The Germanna Foundation, Locust Grove, VA

The Germanna Foundation, a small but growing 501 c (3), is seeking candidates for a new Research Archaeologist to help with the ongoing investigations of Germanna Sites in Locust Grove, Orange County, Virginia. We are looking for a colleague who wishes work toward maintaining a collaborative environment while also pursuing independent research. Germanna Archaeology seeks an archaeologist eager to contribute through leadership, teaching, and research. This person needs to be comfortable “wearing many hats” and willing to take up the variety of tasks necessary to daily operations of an historic site. The Research Archaeologist will regularly participate in conducting and/or supervising archaeological surveys, excavations, and laboratory analysis, as well as authoring/editing related Technical Reports and chapters.

Requirements:

  • Meet the Secretary of Interior Standards (36 CFR Part 51) including an M.A. or Ph.D. (in hand) in anthropology, archaeology or closely related discipline
  • Significant experience with material culture identification and analysis of the historic period in the mid-Atlantic, in particular 18th and 19th centuries (three+ years experience is preferred)
  • Supervisory experience – this position will regularly be working with employees, students, and volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • A working knowledge of relevant historic preservation legislation and regulations

Specialized skill sets are welcome additions to the project. These could include:  experience with lab management, archival research, geophysical survey, GIS applications, ceramic analysis, artifact conservation, public archaeology, social media applications, photogrammetry, creation of exhibits, etc. 

Renewed excavations at the Fort Germanna/Enchanted Castle Site have been conducted through a partnership with Dr. Bernard Means of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). The Foundation hosts a 6-week Field School at the site.  In support of the Field School, the Foundation hires a seasonal Project Assistant and 4-5 paid Interns.

The Foundation opened a dedicated facility for its Archaeology Program in 2019.  The Hitt Archaeology Center has space for washing, cataloging, and analysis of artifacts recovered from the sites. The facility also includes a long-term storage for the purpose of housing collections for future research. 

            The Research Archaeologist will work collaboratively with the Foundation’s Director of Archaeology to conduct surveys, research, and mitigation projects for all of the Foundation properties.  The position is a full time, salaried position working out of the Hitt Archaeology Center (next to the Ft. Germanna Visitor Center), Locust Grove, VA. This position will be called upon to participate in both field and lab work, and in a variety of environmental conditions. Stooping, bending, and lifting (up to 40lbs.) are essential functions of this position. Position is renewable annually based upon satisfactory performance and continued funding.
