AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra), an award-winning, woman-owned, small business is looking to hire a Project Archaeologist based at their Austin, Texas headquarters. The successful applicant will work alongside AmaTerra’s staff serving a variety of Federal, State, municipal, and private clients. Applicants must have an advanced degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, and 3-5 years of experience as a Project Archaeologist. Applicants should have some level of professional archaeological experience leading archaeological survey crews, conducting artifact analysis, and preparing archeological reports. Experience working on and/or leading National Register testing and evaluation projects, as well as data recovery excavations is preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Ability to collaborate and work well with others.
- Working knowledge of Federal and State laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to cultural resources. Understanding of Section 106 of the NHPA and Antiquities Code of Texas is preferred.
- Experience in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and/or Louisiana (preferred), but will consider experience conducting fieldwork, research, analysis, and reporting in other parts of the United States.
- Project experience for State of Texas agencies.
- Experience leading field projects (crew chief, field director, project archaeologist).
- Experience with GPS technologies and other digital data collection methods.
- Understanding of reporting standards; a writing sample may be requested for review.
- Specific research areas and/or skills are preferred (not required), but not limited to: remote sensing techniques, faunal analysis, lithic technology, prehistoric ceramics, historic archaeology and artifact analysis, human osteology, or geomorphology/geoarchaeology.
Successful candidates must also be able to:
- overnight travel required (at least 25–40 percent).
- walk up to 10 miles a day.
- dig shovel tests to depths of up to one meter.
- ability to lift 50 pounds.
- work outdoors in potentially adverse weather conditions.
- ability to work with minimal supervision at times.
- manage time efficiently.
Job responsibilities will include developing and planning field projects, leading field crews on survey, testing, and data recovery projects, report writing, analysis, and working with all staff in AmaTerra Offices. Some experience with project scoping, budgeting, and management is preferred.
