from the Philosophical Faculty
of Kiel University invites applications for a
W2-Professor for Ethnoarchaeology
to start at the earliest possible time or date.

The future holder of the position will carry out research and teaching in the subject area of
Ethnoarchaeology.

The thematic focus of the Professorship lies in Ethnoarchaeology, with an emphasis on
archaeological concepts and approaches, which are connected with both the interpretation of
archaeological sites and artefacts, and the social and cultural anthropological approaches. In
addition to the application of traditional methods, comprehensive theoretical knowledge of
cultural-anthropological archaeology/ethnoarchaeology and anthropological evaluation,
including the expanded possibilities offered by the spectra of natural scientific data and
methods, will be applied.

The professorial tasks include ethnoarchaeological research and teaching, which
encompasses the courses cultural anthropology/ethnoarchaeology, ethnoarchaeological field
research, and the establishment/expansion of an ethnoarchaeological spectrum of theories
and methods. The professorship is involved in the existing course of studies at the Institute of
Pre- and Protohistory.

The interdisciplinary collaboration at Kiel University encompasses both involvement in the
integration of archaeological, natural scientific, and anthropological findings, and the
quantitative and qualitative analysis of the development of past and recent societies.
The professorial tasks also include involvement in the scientific discourses taking place
within the research foci SECC and the Johanna-Mestorf-Academy, as well as planned
collaborative research projects. The professorship contributes to the Cluster of Excellence
ROOTS, the CRC 1266, and other possible collaborative research projects.

Requirements
- Scientific research on ethnoarchaeological research questions, in particular also on
the interpretation and methodological discussion of archaeological and natural
scientific data
- High-ranking, peer-reviewed publications in German and/or English-speaking areas
- Evidence of archaeological and ethnoarchaeological field research
- Evidence of courses taught on anthropological-archaeological/ethnoarchaeological
questions, as well as in prehistoric and/or historical archaeology
- Evidence of personal responsibility in successful applications for third-party funding
- Willingness of non-native speakers to acquire German language skills and to hold
courses in German after three years at the latest, very good English skills
- A doctorate in Pre- and Protohistory or an equivalent subject
- A habilitation, junior professorship, or habilitation-equivalent qualification in the field of
Pre- and Protohistory and/or Ethnoarchaeology

Also desirable
- Evidence of participation in interdisciplinary collaborative research projects, with
leadership responsibility
- Evidence of thematic conceptualisation and organisation of scientific conferences
- Evidence of archaeological and ethnographic field research
- Experience of participation in academic administration
