Principal Investigator – Cultural Heritage
Richmond, VA

Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management firm, is seeking a Principal Investigator (PI) – Cultural Heritage in our Richmond office. This role is full time, regular status, salaried exempt. Expected salary range for this position is $55,000-$65,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and education. Gray & Pape offers a hybrid work environment with built in flexibility for days in the office.

Summary of the Role:
The Principal Investigator – Cultural Heritage is responsible for conducting and overseeing assigned work on cultural heritage projects and studies. This may include archaeological, cultural, historical, and environmental research and context development; literature and desktop assessments to support modeling and due diligence objectives; archaeological and cultural heritage reconnaissance and due diligence surveys; Phase I and II archeological resource identification and assessment; Phase III archaeological treatment plans, data recovery, and mitigation; preparation of a variety of archaeological or cultural heritage documentation and technical reports; and community and stakeholder engagement, including American Indian tribes.

Key Duties:
• Responsible for project management and execution of the scope of work on cultural heritage projects including personnel assignments, and schedules; and consultation support.
• Prepare project specific research designs, and work- and safety- plans.
• Prepare and lead community and project stakeholder engagement strategies, including American Indian tribes.
• Execute all phases of cultural heritage projects, including reconnaissance/due diligence studies, baseline surveys, evaluation, and mitigation.
• Perform research online and in-person at a variety of repositories and archives.
• Disseminate research and write archaeological, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts.
• Establish conclusions regarding archaeological and cultural sensitivity and probability modelling of project areas based on literature reviews/desktop assessments.
• Define scopes of work in consultation with client/agency.
• Prepare project specific research designs, and work- and safety-plans.
• Oversee project teams consisting of Gray & Pape staff and sub-contractors.
• Support the laboratory analysis and curation of archaeological, cultural, and historical artifacts, if applicable.
• Use National Register of Historic Places, and other criteria (e.g., intangible heritage), to make justifiable significance evaluations and treatment recommendations related to archaeological resources, if applicable.
• Maintain the highest quality work and technical standards and participate in the quality assurance-quality control program through peer and technical report reviews.
• Complete projects within assigned schedules and budgets.
• Show commitment to promoting equity and inclusion.
• Develop and participate in public outreach programs to educate the public about cultural heritage management, at the project, professional, and community levels.
• Champion excellent communication and foster a collaborative working environment with all employees, project stakeholders, and business partners.
• Assist with business development and marketing, developing and preparing project specific budgets, and proposals.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. M.A./M.S. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Cultural Heritage studies.
2. 5 years heritage management and lead author heritage management report preparation experience.
3. Understanding of the diverse legal drivers behind heritage management.
4. Experience directing cultural heritage professionals.
5. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholder groups, communities and American Indian tribes.
6. Demonstrable report writing experience and ability to work within report templates and style guides.
7. Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule and budget constraints and prioritize multiple assignments and tasks concurrently.
8. Demonstrated ability to independently design and complete research.
9. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
10. Display curiosity and respect for others’ perspectives and strengths.
11. Commitment to promoting equity and inclusion.
12. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Qualified to register as an RPA with the Register of Professional Archaeologists.
2. Familiarity with geospatial applications such as ESRI ArcMap, Google Earth, and GPS-based mapping skills.
3. Technological skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Community Engagement Tools.
4. Ability to document and assess intangible culture, culturally significant landscapes.
5. Experience working with the NAGPRA process, THPOs, tribal governments.
6. Knowledge and experience with international performance standards.

This position requires travel and is project-dependent with an expectation of travel outside the local area and for multiple days. Some projects may require extended travel.
