Principal Investigator – Archaeology (Focus: Historic), Richmond, Virginia
Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management (CRM) firm, is seeking a Principal Investigator - Archaeology to join our Archaeology practice in our Richmond, Virginia office. Expected salary range for this role is $55,000-$70,000. This role is full time, regular status, exempt position. Gray & Pape offers a hybrid work environment with built in flexibility for days in the office. The Principal Investigator – Archaeology will have a focus on historic archaeological sites.
Summary of the Role:
The Principal Investigator-Archaeology position is responsible for conducting and overseeing all aspects of archaeological projects and studies. This includes: archaeological, cultural, historical, and environmental research and context development; literature and desktop assessments to support modeling and due diligence objectives; archaeological reconnaissance and due diligence surveys; Phase I and II archeological resource identification and assessment; Phase III archaeological treatment plans, data recovery, and mitigation; archaeological, cultural, and historical artifact and laboratory analysis; preparation of a variety of archaeological documentation and technical reports; and preparing artifacts and records for curation.
For this position we are looking for someone with a focus on historic archaeological sites and that has experience directing the excavations of and analyzing the results of excavations of Euro-American sites dating from the seventeenth century to the mid-twentieth century.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MA/MS in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field.
- 5 years CRM supervisory and lead author CRM report preparation experience.
- Comprehensive understanding of the legal and administrative framework of CRM (Section 106 and NEPA).
- Experience directing project teams and field crews.
- Demonstrable report writing experience with experience preparing deliverables using report templates and style guides.
- Demonstrated skills and supervisory experience in all phases of fieldwork.
- Traditional and digital mapping, including total station and GPS-based mapping skills; photography; survey techniques; and excavation techniques.
- Ability to analyze data using statistical analysis, material culture analysis, and geomorphological analysis.
- Qualified to register with the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) and under the Secretary of the Interior Standards (36 CFR 61) in archaeology.
- Excellent understanding of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Criteria and their application.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to operate a passenger car/light truck.
The Principal Investigator will travel and be on-site for assigned fieldwork. Travel is project-dependent with an expectation of travel outside the local area and for multiple days. Some projects may require extended travel.
