Position Summary
The WHS seeks to fill the Museum Archaeology Program Director position. Under the general supervision of the WHS Deputy Director, the Director of the Museum Archaeology Program (Program) provides administration, guidance, and strategic vision for the Program. The Program conducts archaeological and historical research on behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other entities as required under both federal and state historic preservation and environmental legislation. The Program identifies archaeological sites and historic buildings/structures, determines if they meet the criteria for listing on the National and/or State Registers of Historic Places, and conducts archaeological mitigation of sites that will be impacted by public projects.
The Program Director sets the strategic vision and direction of the program, establishes, and monitors all Program policies and procedures, and serves as the primary liaison to the WisDOT, DNR, and with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The Program Director is the primary contact for all inquiries from the media, public, and other state, or federal entities. The incumbent is responsible for developing and monitoring budgets, and all agreements with other divisions and state agencies. The Program Director supervises production of the Program’s publication series (Archaeology Research Series); the technical volume series (Research Reports in Archaeology), and other reports summarizing Program research.
The Program director is responsible for the supervision and management of staff conducting fieldwork, laboratory analysis, research, preparing reports, and publications. The Program Director must ensure that all research meets the federal archaeological standards established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Guide for Public Archaeology in Wisconsin.
The incumbent oversees the curation of archaeological collections and coordinates curation initiatives with the Deputy Director and Chief Curator, with responsibility for managing all Program data programs and applications.
Salary Information
The salary will be between $32 - $50 per hour ($66,560 to $104,000 annually) in accordance with the provisions of the current Compensation Plan. This Career Executive position is in pay schedule 81, range 01; Civil service classification is Historical Society Manager. A two-year Career Executive Trial Period will be required.
Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidate will possess all of the following:
- Meet the minimum requirements defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR part 61 for qualified archaeologist:
The minimum professional qualifications in archaeology are a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus:
- At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management;
- At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology, and
- Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
- Meet the requirements of a qualified archaeologist as defined in state statute
“Qualified archaeologist" means an individual who has a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field and at least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological or physical anthropological research, administration or management, at least 4 months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology or physical anthropology and a demonstrated ability to carry research to completion. Professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric period OR professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the historic period.
- Project supervisory experience in cultural resources management in areas including: archaeological project design and management, archaeological field research (survey, evaluation and data recovery), archaeological laboratory processing, artifact identification and analysis, writing professional reports on archaeological or cultural resource issues.
- Experience creating effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including government agencies.
In addition to minimum qualifications, a well-qualified candidate will additionally have experience in the Midwest US/Upper Great Lakes Region and possess both of the following:
- Professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric period.
- Professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the historic period.
