Historic Archaeologist - Archaeology/Cultural Resources

Description

The Northeast Archaeology Research Center, Inc. (NE ARC) is seeking to hire an experienced full-time Historic Archaeologist/Principal Investigator (PI) to join our team. Projects will be conducted throughout the northern New England region, primarily in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. We are based in Farmington, Maine and the position may allow the possibility of work to be conducted remotely from the northern New England region.

This is a career-path position and NE ARC is willing to provide support and training to enable the right candidate to obtain the experience required to be listed on the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont Approved Lists for Conducting Historic Archaeology and to serve as a National Park Service qualified archaeologist and Principal Investigator.

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a closely related field.
  • Experience in consulting archaeology including supervisory experience in survey, site evaluation and data recovery at historical archaeology sites, conducting archival background research, report writing and artifact analysis.
  • Register of Professional Archaeologists certified or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of North American historical archaeology; artifact analysis; historic preservation; Secretary of the Interior Standards for Archaeology; National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria; archival research techniques; and familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations for cultural resources and historic preservation including, but not limited to, Section 106.
  • Strong verbal and technical writing skills, with the ability to author and review technical reports, scopes-of-work and research designs.
  • Computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Proficiency with archaeological survey and field mapping techniques using survey equipment.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and be willing to travel to conduct projects and attend meetings throughout northern New England as needed.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or hold a federally approved work visa.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Field supervision of all aspects of archaeological survey, testing and data recovery at historic sites, site recording, and resource evaluation.
  • Coordinating and communicating with a range of clients as well as representatives from various local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Working independently in coordination with NE ARC Director/Assistant Director.
  • Analyzing, evaluating and documenting historic sites and artifacts.
  • Conducting archival and other historical background research.
  • Writing technical reports, proposals, scopes-of-work and other documents related to cultural resource management.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with level of experience, background education and qualifications, and will start between $55,000 and $65,000 per year. This is a full-time position with benefits, including 401k, sick and vacation time, holidays and healthcare stipend.
