Overview

Do you thrive in the pursuit of ensuring excellence in environmental consulting services for your clients? SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding our San Antonio team and looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work.

We are looking for a Cultural Resources Principal Investigator and Team Lead with experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology. The person selected will assist to plan and execute projects located primarily in San Antonio, but also throughout Central, South and West Texas. The successful applicant will be overseeing and mentoring a mid-sized team of field archaeologists. She or he will have a good understanding of Texas Antiquities Code, National Historic Preservation Act and San Antonio's Unified Development Code and NEPA compliance and be eligible for holding state Antiquities Code permits. She or he will also work with the company's directors to grow the cultural resources team through excellent work and business development, including preparing technical and cost proposals.

This is a regular, full-time position. The position is based in the Alamo City - San Antonio, Texas - and the applicant should be located in, or be willing to relocate to, that location.

The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic central Texas cultural and environmental resources planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private and nonprofit clients. Our San Antonio office offers a work environment in a great city.



Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include supervising and mentoring approximately ten SWCA archaeologists, working to develop proposals for existing and new clients, and to conduct and manage cultural resources survey and monitoring projects within the San Antonio office's region. Other activities can include site significance evaluations in relation to local, state and federal guidelines; developing mitigation strategies to avoid, or correct, adverse effects and impacts to historic properties; data recovery studies; and preparing / reviewing reports for regulatory compliance within the Central Texas, South Texas and the Texas-Gulf Coast region. Most projects involve "Phase I" archaeological surveys but National Register site evaluative testing and data recovery excavations will occasionally be performed under your leadership.

Other activities will be to schedule and oversee field studies, marketing and business development initiatives, prepare or edit reports related to projects completed, and monitor project budgets. SWCA San Antonio is also focused on Giving Back to our community and promoting scientific progress. We encourages staff to volunteer on community charitable events, and/or join our Scientific Leadership in which SWCA provides time to develop articles or conference presentations.

 


Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology.
  • Must meet the Secretary of Interior's archaeology standards.
  • 5+ years of archaeology fieldwork experience.
  • 5 years of supervisory and/or team leadership experience.
  • Experience completing projects as an archaeology Principal Investigator.
  • Experience with Section 106, Antiquities Code of Texas, and San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation regulatory requirements.
  • Prior work archaeological experience in Central and South Texas area.

Preferred:

  • Listed as a Registered Professional Archaeologist (or qualified for RPA status).
