Architectural Historian

PaleoWest Archaeology has an immediate opening for an Architectural Historian to support our California program, working with current staff in our three regional offices. Project assignments for this position may involve travel throughout the California region. This is a full-time, salaried position to be located in our Monrovia, Mission Viejo, or Orinda/Bay Area office.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Independently or leading a project team, conduct historic resource assessments/evaluations according to local, state, and federal criteria of significance;
- Perform archival and historical research using primary and secondary documentary sources;
- Perform oral history research;
- Develop historic contexts which identify significant context, themes, and property types and write historic background overviews;
- Plan and carry out historic resource surveys of a variety of residential, commercial, and institutional properties using Arc-GIS-enabled tablet computers and other cutting-edge survey methodology;
- Record, document, and evaluate historical buildings, structures, and landscapes to current professional standards;
- Review design plans for consistency with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards and Guidelines;
- Prepare HABS/HAER/HALS documentation meeting national or state-level documentation requirements;
- Prepare professional technical reports of documentary and field research and defensible compliance documentation in support of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA);
- Assist with project management tasks; and
- Prepare proposals, track budgets, assist with marketing and business development efforts, and interface with clients, agencies, and the public on behalf of the company.
Education/Experience:
M.A. degree in public history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related discipline required. The successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior\'s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural Historian. This position requires 3 or more years of professional experience as an Architectural Historian. In addition, California experience and a working knowledge of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation laws and practices, including NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, CEQA, and the California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR) are required. Strong familiarity with municipal charters and general plans as they pertain to architectural history as well as supervisory experience mentoring and developing junior architectural historians are a plus.
Required Skills:
The applicant must have experience conducting and directing architectural and historical structure surveys and recording and evaluating historic built environment resources on California DPR 523 forms according to National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and CRHR criteria. Working knowledge of regulatory compliance, familiarity with archival research, and strong written and oral communication skills are desirable. Experience conducting architectural history work in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area and experience preparing NRHP nomination forms are strongly desired. The successful candidate must demonstrate a positive work ethic, reliability, ability to manage multiple projects, and commitment to working in a team work environment.
Compensation:
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
