Description:

Desert Research Institute (DRI), the research campus of the Nevada System of Higher Education is seeking applicants for a full-time Architectural Historian based in our Las Vegas Southern Nevada Science Center. The successful applicant will serve as a subject matter expert for the built environment, primarily at the U.S. Department of Energy Nevada National Security Site. In addition, the applicant will assist in the pursuit of additional research contracts and grant opportunities.  Depending on qualifications and experience, this position may be filled as an Assistant (Rank 2) or Associate (Rank 3) research faculty level.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing architectural identification, evaluation, effect assessment, recommendation, and treatment activities in accordance with Nevada Architectural Survey and Inventory Guidelines.
  • Development of historic contexts based on archival and historical research using primary and secondary source materials.
  • Timely preparation of technical reports, forms, and other documents in compliance with the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Technical support consistent with the Historic American Building Survey/Historic Architecture Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes (HABS/HAER/HALS) guidelines.
  • Support for cultural resource management planning and historic preservation.
  • Effective communication with Pl’s and agency clients/sponsors.
  • Proposal development activities, including pursuit of new grant and contract opportunities.
  • Presentation of research to professional, agency, and public audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in architectural history, historic preservation; or other closely related field
  •  A minimum of five years of experience employed by a consulting firm, agency, or other professional organization conducting research, writing, or consulting in American architectural history
  • Experience working on governmental agency compliance projects recording, evaluating, and reporting on architectural resources
  • Demonstrated research and writing skills to produce high quality compliance documents

 Conditions of Employment

  • Employment is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check.
  • US Citizenship is required and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance to work on U.S. Department of Energy controlled facility is mandatory. The successful candidate will be offered the position contingent upon passing a mandatory test for the absence of any illegal drugs (as defined in 10 CFR 707.4) as well as satisfactory credit, criminal and background investigations.  Participation in an ongoing random drug testing program is also required.
  • The position is also contingent upon a medical clearance to perform the field duties described. 
  • Must be willing to travel frequently for field projects.
  • Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather and in areas controlled for radiological purposes.

DRI’s starting salary is competitive and commensurate with education, experience, and aligns with similar public academic research institutions.
