A Museum Technician provides support to City Archeologists to enforce the Archeological Protection Code on projects of the Archeology Division of the Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA). This work is performed under the direct supervision of the Code-supported Archeologist, in coordination with the staff Archeologists and under the general supervision of the City Archeologist.
 
Do you enjoy discovering and interpreting history? Do you have experience in archeological preservation and document research? The ideal candidate should have good knowledge of and interest in historic and archeological preservation and methods, including federal and state preservation standards, along with experience in using Geographic Information System (GIS) software.  A background in conducting documentary research and archeological excavation, and knowledge of historical artifact types, particularly from the 18th and 19th centuries in the Mid-Atlantic region, are essential to this position. The job requires an individual who pays close attention to detail and has excellent organizational skills that can be applied to project coordination and tracking.  In addition, the ideal candidate must be able to interact well with the public and staff, and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
 
The Opportunity - Examples of Work
·         Performs specialized duties related to reviews of development projects to ensure compliance with the City of Alexandria\'s Archeological Protection Code; including researching the history of development properties and creating historical overlay maps using GIS software.
·         Provides support for archeologists conducting reviews.
·         Updates archeological preservation database related to Code project review.
·         Maintains, organizes and updates archeology files on all Code-related projects.
·         Helps to disseminate information about Archeological Code requirements and results to the public.
·         Conducts excavations on Code-related projects, as needed to satisfy Code requirements.
·         Works weekly with Archives and Code Administration to dispose of expired documents and transition documents that cannot be destroyed.
·         Staffs desk for Code Administration at City Hall one (1) day per week to review building permits and conduct Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) searches as needed at Code Administration.
·         Performs related work as required.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
Completion of college courses in archeology, historic preservation, history, or museum arts; at least one year of experience as an entry-level Museum Aide; any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.  Each year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of relevant work experience, conversely each year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of relevant formal education.

Additional: A valid driver\'s license and the ability to pass a required City driving class in order to operate a City van.
Preferred Qualifications
Technical skills to include basic carpentry and painting, good working knowledge of museum practices for object handling. Ability to perform the following tasks, with or without an accommodation: work outdoors in adverse weather conditions for historic site preservation and maintenance; conduct physical labor, including shoveling, kneeling, and lifting 25-30 lbs. during the course of a day\'s work for tasks such as carpentry, painting, and archeological excavation.
 
Four-Year College Degree in anthropology, archeology, history, American studies, historic preservation, collections management or related subject. Minimum 1 year of experience in the following: working with local and/or state and Federal preservation laws; evaluating development projects for archeological potential; conducting Phase I, II and III-level excavations; communicating with the public and professionals; using GPS, digitized survey equipment, and Geographical Information System (GIS) software; and coordinating and tracking projects.
