Union Street, Suite 327 Alexandria, Virginia 22314 www.alexandriaarchaeology.org Permanent Full-Time Archaeologist Position—40 hours per week Open August 21 through September 18, 2015 The City of Alexandria is seeking to fill a full-time Archaeologist position in a division of the Office of Historic Alexandria. The City staff work together to preserve, study, and interpret the past--discovering, protecting, and analyzing the history and archaeology of Alexandria to enhance the public’s understanding of our shared heritage. The successful candidate for the current position will take the lead role in laboratory direction, curation, and collections management. Duties include: supervising staff, volunteers and students in laboratory procedures; organizing storage of a collection of more than two million artifacts; developing policies for collection management based upon professional standards and practices and the needs of the collection; developing and improving relational databases for archaeological research and collections management, in conjunction with City database administrator and programmers; conducting fieldwork with other staff, as needed, and contributing to site and artifact analysis and interpretation; setting direction for management of Archaeology program archives, with guidance from City Archivist, including field records, collections records, site reports, historical records, photographs, and electronic documents and images; implementing and overseeing document imaging program to preserve original documents and make records more easily accessible; helping to staff and maintain the archaeology museum; promoting an understanding of the city\'s past for both public and professional audiences at lectures, conferences, and workshops, in publications and exhibits, through the design of interpretive markers, and on the website; and interacting with the public in a variety of ways including recruitment and training of volunteers, community history dialogues, resource and interpretive planning, and attending and speaking at community meetings.
