Duties:

Professional work will be performed in support of the technical and financial assistance functions of the NRCS, principally under the authority of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). This position will primarily involve work in counties throughout the state of Texas and will:

• Provide professional support to the State Cultural Resources Specialist, utilizing an advanced understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, and evaluating cultural resource sites.
• Conduct pre-field office research, field surveys, and site evaluations using a variety of reference materials, interviews with source individuals, aerial photographs, and technical instruments.
• Search areas of proposed projects for evidence of historic and prehistoric remains.
• Determine the exact location of sites and mark them on maps and aerial photographs.
• Record information on the site survey form and prepare an archaeological reconnaissance report needed for evaluation and management of the project.
• Ensure work assignments are carried out in a safe and timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
• Review work in progress and report to superiors relative to the completion date and other standards set in the report.
• Conduct research and field evaluations on areas of potential effect for planned NRCS actions: Provide archaeology/cultural resources assessments on specifically assigned projects to facilitate agency objectives. 60%
• Provide reports and recommendations for use per the NRCS Cultural Resources Programmatic Agreement; Work directly with NRCS staff to complete surveys/assessments in support of overall agency objectives that are typically part of Farm Bill cost-share programs. 40%

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in Minimum 20 years of experience in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field of study. OR MA/MS Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related discipline.

• Valid State Driver’s license; Meets Secretary of Department interior/OPM requirements as an Archaeologist. Registered Professional Archaeologist accreditation is preferred.
• Experience required with Windows, Copying Machine, MS Word, MS Excel
• Typewriter, Global Positioning System use, Auto-CAD

Other:

• Subject to mandatory USDA Computer Security and Privacy training as mandated by law. Annual information system security, anti-harassment, and civil rights training.
• OJT and within-Agency training specific to the operational aspects of NRCS to facilitate the efficiency of the position function.
• Travel Requirements: Field visits - GOV vehicle
• Overnight travel: If overnight travel is required, expenses will be covered by the government according to Joint Federal Travel Regulations.
