Applicants must meet the U. S. Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and must hold a master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation Studies, Architectural History or related fields. The applicant must have at least four years employment experience in the fields of archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation, cultural resources management, or related professions. 

The salary range is $78,199.42 - $110,075.94. Note that the position is eligible for a signing bonus of $5,000. 

This position is full time (37.5 hours per week) and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews assigned projects from MassDOT\'s Advertising Lists to evaluate effects on cultural and historic resources. Carries out the appropriate review, coordination, and clearance procedures for each project to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and applicable state historic preservation laws. This task may include review of project plans, conducting background research and site visits, preparation of assessment documentation and National Register eligibility evaluations, and determinations of effect on National Register properties.
  • Coordinates cultural resources review processes with MassDOT staff, project consultants, federal and state agencies, federally recognized tribes, local historical commissions, community organizations, and the public. Coordinates cultural resources review documentation with the other MassDOT Environmental units to assist them in securing permits and meeting obligations under related environmental laws and regulations.
  • Reviews and evaluates consultants’ scopes of work, permit applications, and budget proposals for technical adequacy and for cost effectiveness. Reviews memorandums and reports to ensure that professional standards are met.
  • Demonstrates good working knowledge of the evaluation criteria for National Register of Historic Places eligibility and of Federal and State historic preservation laws and regulations.
  • Identifies context-sensitive solutions for cultural resources issues.
