Director of Archaeology
New Job Posted
The Director of Archaeology will play an integral and essential role in achieving the strategic goals of Drayton Hall Preservation Trust (DHPT) by improving the protection and understanding of the cultural resources of Drayton Hall plantation. The Director of Archaeology will accomplish this by leading archaeological excavations, surveys, and laboratory analysis, and by interpreting information on a day-to-day basis to the visiting public, scholars, educators, and donors. In addition to supporting the overall mission of DHPT, the Director of Archaeology will play a key role in establishing and sustaining Drayton Hall’s archaeology department and related public archaeology initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a multidisciplinary background with experience leading archaeological programs at historic sites and/or museums similar to Drayton Hall.
This position will conduct large-scale excavations designed to research aspects of Drayton Hall and supervise surveys to ensure that construction and landscape maintenance does not impact the archaeological resources. The Director will also work with the Manager of Landscapes, Horticulture and Modern Facilities to ensure that landscape stewardship and research is sympathetic to Drayton Hall’s preservation philosophy and/or strategic plan.
The Director of Archaeology is a full-time, exempt-status position under the direct supervision of the President and CEO. The archaeological collections consist of more than one-million objects uncovered during the twentieth century and there is a fully functioning archaeological laboratory where materials are processed, catalogued, analyzed, and stored for future exhibit or study.
