Position Summary 

The staff archaeologist is a full-time, non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Director of Archaeology.   The archaeological collections consist of more than one-million objects uncovered during the twentieth century and there is a fully functioning archaeological laboratory where materials are processed, catalogued, analyzed, and stored for future exhibit or study.

This position will conduct fieldwork and basic laboratory duties including artifact processing.  In addition, the position will successfully interpret the archaeological work to the visiting public as well as work to engage local communities through outreach including presentations, social media postings, and educational programs including archaeological field schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carry out the full range of standard archaeological excavation and laboratory procedures.
  • Interpret the archaeological excavations to the public and assists the Director with disseminating results about archaeology to Drayton Hall Preservation Trust staff and visitors.
  • Conduct artifact analyses and historical research to support the archaeological research program.
  • Assists the Wexler Fellow with collections management projects, artifact processing and storage needs.
  • Assists the Director with inputting the archaeological GIS dataset and digitally collected field data.
  • Conduct and supervise specialized processing including water screening and flotation.
  • Serves as a crew chief and assists in directing other part time staff, interns, and volunteers at the site and in the lab. Responsible for maintaining, updating, and checking field and laboratory processing records.
  • Regularly presents results of fieldwork at annual professional meetings and symposia.
  • Manages the archaeology volunteer program including orientation and reporting volunteer hours.
  • Maintains the archaeology library and coordinates with preservation staff to organize and catalogue books.
  • Undertakes other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • A. in Historical Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, History, or closely related field required.
  • Completion of an archaeological field school; additional work in historical archaeology preferred.
  • Knowledge of archaeological methods and theory including historical archaeology of the English colonial world, artifact analyses, database functionality, field methodologies, collections management issues and public interpretation and GIS and GPS.
  • Ability and demonstrated interest in conducting research in colonial and early American historical archaeology and material culture. Experience cataloguing artifacts from colonial British sites.
  • Excellent communication skills, reflected in strong and effective writing and speaking, as well as excellent diplomatic skills.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work schedules varying from a normal workday.
