Job Description:

Maryland Environmental Service Technical and Environmental Services Group has an opening for an Archaeologist IV or V (depending on experience). This position will support projects for the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Secretary’s Office of Cultural Resources at their offices in Hanover, MD and work with the MDOT Chief Archaeologist & Director. This position will have supervisory responsibility for other Maryland Environmental Service cultural resources staff.

Position duties include planning, supervising and conducting cultural resources evaluations and assessments; managing and reviewing consultant work products; and assisting with workload and project management. Specific duties involve supervising the archaeology laboratory director and staff ensuring artifact collections received into the Harriet Tubman Archaeology Laboratory are processed and analyzed in an expedient, proficient, and professional manner from processing through curation. May also manage or assist with tasks assigned to interns. Daily duties include researching and writing on historic-period archaeological sites related to the African American diaspora, consulting with descendant communities, and supporting the Director. Some time may be in support of the Maryland Roadside Historical Marker Program to review applications, research accuracy of old markers, and assist in coordination with historic marker nominators and community/tribal groups.

This position may oversee or direct field projects which may require overnight stays to collect information on historic sites, attend meetings, and participate in field observations and documentation.

Estimated Pay Range:

Archaeologist IV: $71,000 - $97,000
Archaeologist V: $86,000 - $103,000

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum qualifications include an undergraduate and graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, historic preservation or other related field from an accredited college or university plus:

Archaeologist IV - a minimum of eight years of applicable experience including two years which must have included responsibility planning, supervising, and conducting cultural resources evaluations; or
Archaeologist V – a minimum of ten years of applicable experience including three years which must have included responsibility planning, supervising and conducting cultural resources evaluations.

A Doctorate degree may be substituted for two years of the required applicable experience for either classification.

The preferred candidate will have demonstrated the ability to successfully complete archaeological projects and assignments, including formal writing of reports and official correspondence, and have experience in Maryland or the Chesapeake Bay region directing archaeological projects. Additionally, well qualified candidates will have prior responsibility for planning, supervising and conducting cultural resources evaluations and reviewing consultant work products. Ideally, the applicant will be proficient in the analysis and interpretation of 18th and 19th century material culture including specialized artifact analysis with faunal remains or other artifact types.
