Dear SHA Members,

The Call for Papers for the 2022 Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology is included in the spring SHA Newsletter that you received last week (https://mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=702359).  Please review the Call for Papers and make plans now to present at the 2022 Conference.

The 2022 Conference will take place January 5-8, 2022 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The theme, “Enduring and Elusive Freedoms,” reflects Philadelphia’s place in American history as a center of patriotic activity during the American Revolution (at least when the British weren’t occupying the city) and its critical role in the abolition movement. At the same time, the theme recognizes that the lofty ideals put forward two-and-a-half centuries ago remain imperfectly realized. The fight for liberty, freedom, and equality is not a single event, but a continuing process. Historical archaeology, as history from the ground up, has much to add to this discussion and is a powerful tool for revealing and addressing injustices past and present. While the conference committee encourages papers on all forms of historical and underwater archaeology, papers that speak to the conference theme are especially encouraged. Presentations by students, both undergraduate and graduate, are particularly welcome.

The abstract submission period will be open from May 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021 at www.conftool.com/sha2022/.
