Diving for the Clotilda: The Archaeology, History, and Legacy of the Last Known Slave Ship
On Saturday, October 15 at 2 pm ET, the Archaeological Institute of America will host a special virtual event in celebration of International Archaeology Day. Diving for the Clotilda: The Archaeology, History, and Legacy of the Last Known Slave Ship will explore the wreck of the infamous slave ship discovered in 2019 in the Mobile River in Alabama.
Join archaeologists exploring the wreck, historians researching its history, and descendants of the people who were brought over on the ship, as they discuss their work to preserve the Clotilda and ensure that its legacy and stories are not forgotten. The event will be moderated by Alexandra Jones, AIA Academic Trustee and founder of Archaeology in the Community. Speakers will include James Delgado, maritime archaeologist and Senior Vice President of SEARCH, Darron Patterson, President of the Clotilda Descendants Association, and Stayce Hathorn, State Archaeologist at the Alabama Historical Commission as well as additional presenters involved with the research and ongoing investigations of the Clotilda and archaeology of the descendant community.
