Fellow historical archaeologists,

For many, the last week of November means the onset of the holiday season, upcoming final exams or the opening of ski slopes. For all of you who are historical archaeologists I also want to point out that it is the last week to register in advance for this year’s meeting in St. Charles, Mo.   Yes, this is a call to SHA membership to: a) renew your membership in SHA and b) register for the conference.   December 1st is the deadline for advance registration so please get online and get yourself registered for this year’s conference (www.conftool.com/sha2019).

I would particularly encourage you to attend this year’s conference for a variety of reasons – here are a few of them:

1)              If you live in the continental United States, St. Charles is as centrally located as it gets as the conference venue is just a 15 minute drive from the St. Louis Airport

2)              St Charles is very reasonably priced compared to any of our other recent venues with conference hotel rates being as low as $118 a night (with FREE parking and breakfast)

3)              As for conference content, I would highlight two significant things. The past president’s student reception has been repurposed to provide structured opportunities for students to get advice on topics such as applying to graduate school, job opportunities and CV/Resume building. For all attendees, we will be hosting a guest speaker on Thursday morning of the conference. Dr. Kate Clancy is a bioanthropologist, who is one of the leading voices on harassment in the field sciences. It is her work that we specifically reference in our Society’s statement on sexual harassment. (See her biographical entry on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathryn_B._H._Clancy). In addition, she will be facilitating breakout sessions on this issue immediately after her talk.

Finally, to be blunt the vitality of an organization such as SHA is enormously dependent on an engaged membership and the best way to be engaged is to participate in our conferences — so please renew your membership AND get yourself registered for the St. Charles conference!

All the best,

Mark Warner
President, SHA
