Editorial Policy

Manuscripts submitted to Technical Briefs in Historical Archaeology must be written in English, be no more than 3000 words in length, and constitute original pieces of work. Manuscripts previously published on a personal or institutional homepage may be considered unpublished works and eligible for publication in the series. All manuscripts must follow the SHA Style Guide for the journal Historical Archaeology or they will not be accepted for peer review. Submitted papers are expected to meet a high standard of quality in keeping with SHA journal criteria. The Technical Briefs Editor reserves the right to reject (with or without review by referees) or return for revision any submission that is of poor quality, excessive length or that addresses an inappropriate subject matter. Copyright ownership for published papers is transferred by the author(s) to the Society for Historical Archaeology as detailed in the copyright agreement employed by the journal Historical Archaeology.

Manuscript Submission and Review

Manuscript Submission and Review Manuscripts are submitted electronically to the electronic submission website. Please contact the Technical Briefs Editor if you have questions about submitting a manuscript for publication Submitted manuscripts and accompanying figures must follow the SHA Style Guide.

The Technical Briefs Editor reviews manuscripts for appropriate subject content and format, and a decision will be made on its suitability for peer review. Authors will be immediately notified of the decision. An Associate Editor and one additional external reviewer with appropriate expertise are responsible for peer review of the manuscript. Based on their assessment, the Technical Briefs Editor and the SHA Editor will be responsible for acceptance and publication of all papers. The Technical Briefs Editor will notify the author that the manuscript has been accepted unconditionally, has been accepted after the author has addressed recommended revisions, or that the manuscript has been rejected. Articles are copy-edited to conform to the SHA style guidelines. Authors will be responsible for proof reading page proofs and making corrections.

Manuscript Publication

Manuscripts with SHA copyright ownership are copy-edited to SHA style guidelines. Beginning in 2017, the Technical Briefs series is published in the journal Historical Archaeology and are indexed as part of that journal. After final acceptance by the Technical Briefs Editor, Technical Briefs articles are published in Historical Archaeology and are available for purchase through the Springer website . Prior to 2017 Technical Briefs are available on the SHA website for free.

Reprint Requests and External Links

Requests may be made to the SHA Journal Editor, Christopher Mathews, at matthewsc@mail.montclair.edu for permission to reprint articles from the series, or to establish external website links. The SHA Editor may grant permission to reprint entire articles or excerpts but will not grant permission to print abstracts or condensations other than those original to the article. Briefs must be reprinted as published, except that typographical errors may be corrected. No changes favoring alternate spellings are permitted (“color” to “colour” or “archaeology” to “archeology”).
