What is the Mentoring Program?
Mentoring is a fundamental part of educational and professional development. It is essential to the cultivation and maintenance of diversity in historical archaeology. It is with these principles in mind that the Gender and Minority Affairs Committee (GMAC) and the Academic and Professional Training Committee (APTC) have launched the Society for Historical Archaeology’s first Mentoring Program. With your help, we can together build the foundations of the program.
Partners are paired based on their research interests and professional status. All participating are also asked to sign a confidentiality agreement to protect their privacy. They are also asked to complete an application that outlines research interests and goals. The signed agreement forms are to protect the core of the mentoring relationship by setting out expectations and groundwork for the partnership. Since the program is under the umbrella of the GMAC, mentoring may include issues that are best kept between mentor and mentee.
The initial commitment is one year. Participants can reevaluate at that point as to whether or not they wish to continue as mentors or mentees. All those participating in the mentoring program as mentees are expected to take on mentoring roles in the future. It is part of a commitment to give back.

Some mentoring relationships may not work out, or may be very helpful in some aspects but not others. This is okay and does not reflect poorly on the participants. Mentoring relationships can be ended at any time, for any reason. Just contact the GMAC.Applications
