Architectural Historian 2
Richmond, VA

Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management firm, has an opening for an Architectural Historian 2 to join our Architectural History practice and support our Richmond, VA office. This role is an hourly, non-exempt position with a range of $24.00-$30.25 per hour commensurate with experience, qualifications, and education.

Summary of the Role:

The Architectural Historian 2 is responsible for the completion and management of documentation and assessment of projects, the transmission of data (notes, photocopies, maps, photographs) to others, conducting historical research and narrative writing for compliance reports, and completion of National Register nomination forms and tax credit applications. All technical work shall be performed under the direct supervision of a Principal Investigator or their designee.

Key Duties:

  • Conduct historical research online and at physical repositories.
  • Write historical narratives that provide background and context for cultural resources.
  • Write formal descriptions of aboveground cultural resources that include, where applicable, form, plan, style, materials, and details.
  • Conduct on-site investigation of cultural resources to obtain an understanding of the resources and their physical environment.
  • Record aboveground cultural resources through on-site photography, GIS-based mapping, sketch plans, and notes.
  • Perform aboveground cultural resource survey, collecting data required to complete SHPO (or other applicable) survey forms, and prepares survey forms and accompanying documentation.
  • Identify and investigate potential areas of significance for cultural resources.
  • Apply the National Register of Historic Places evaluation criteria to assess the significance and integrity of aboveground cultural resources.
  • Communicate research, analysis, and evaluation orally and in writing in a manner that is clear, justifiable, and consistent with applicable standards.
  • Develop preliminary Areas of Potential Effect (APEs) and applies the criteria of adverse effects to historic properties consistent with Section 106.
  • Work with Principal Investigators to provide aboveground content for cultural resources reports.
  • Support team members and clients, as directed, during the Section 106 consultation process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA, Architectural History or related field/discipline plus capabilities in architectural history as demonstrated through education, scholarly, professional, or volunteer work.
  • 2 years of CRM consulting experience, including architectural survey.
  • Working understanding of the National Register of Historic Places evaluation criteria and the legal framework of CRM.
  • Experience with historical writing and analysis for cultural resource reports.
  • Working understanding of film and digital SLR cameras and archival photography.
  • Working knowledge of GIS/GPS mapping.
  • Experience managing tasks independently.
  • Experience with entry level client interactions.
  • Clear, effective, and professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Travel:

Up to 30% of the work is expected to be performed outside of the local area. Extended travel for weeks at a time may be required.
