Position Summary:

The Department of Anthropology and Geography at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology with a specialty in historical or Indigenous archaeology. We seek a collegial individual who will complement our faculty’s interests, support our undergraduate programs, and work to grow our graduate program. Scholars with research focus outside of Alaska are welcome to apply with the willingness to expand their programs to include the North.

Duties:

Engage in course development and instruction: Responsible for developing and teaching courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content descriptions; developing and modifying curriculum and teaching modalities; engaging in student learning and curricular assessment activities, and holding office hours appropriate for the courses being taught. Courses will include introductory courses in general anthropology, archaeology, and Alaska Native cultures as well as upper-division courses in northern ethnography, historical archaeology, archaeological theory, and analytical techniques in archaeology. Additional courses will depend on the applicant’s expertise. Candidate will teach and work with diverse populations. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Chairing and serving as member of research graduate advisory committees. Guiding and advising undergraduate students on independent research. Providing academic advising and mentoring. Develop and maintain an independent research program in historical or Indigenous archaeology in Northwestern North America (including Alaska): Research efforts should include undergraduate and graduate students, pursue external funding to support the program that can include cultural resource management contracts, foster community and stakeholder collaboration and participation, and publish results in peer-reviewed publications and/or produce refereed reports in cultural resource management. Actively participate in service activities: Serving on department, college, and university committees; assisting in NAGPRA compliance; and providing professional and public service to the department, college, university, and community.

The Department, which maintains a Northern focus, offers baccalaureate degrees in Anthropology (B.A., B.S., and a minor), a minor in Cultural and Natural Resources Management, and a Master’s degree in Applied Anthropology with two emphases (applied cultural anthropology and cultural resource management). We maintain facilities dedicated to anthropological scholarship, including three archaeological processing labs, a GIS computer lab, a cultural anthropology lab, a bioarchaeology lab, and a repository for faunal collections of Alaska Consortium of Zooarchaeologists.   • Evidence of a potential for successful teaching, service, and research activity.

  • Knowledge of contemporary curricular content for archaeology/anthropology.
  • Research specialization in historical or Indigenous archaeology.

  • Experience in field archaeology.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of the Alaska context, Alaska Native people, and Alaska communities.
Experience designing and conducting collaborative projects with local and/or Indigenous communities.
College-level teaching experience both online and in the classroom.
Experience in Cultural Resource Management, GIS, and contemporary field documentation technologies.
Typical Experience:
Length of time and type of experience required for this position should be appropriate to the rank of tenure-track assistant professor. Applicants must have university-level teaching experience and record of research and peer-reviewed publications, including refereed reports, or demonstrated potential for peer-reviewed publications, or an established record of managing projects in Cultural Resource Management.
Required Education or Training:

PhD in Anthropology (specific emphasis in archaeology) or Archaeology. ABDs will be considered but employment is contingent on conferral of degree by time of hire in August 2023.
Salary Information:

This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure track faculty appointment complete with both a competitive salary (DOE) and full employee benefits package with an expected start date in August 2023.
