Senior Principal Investigator – History/Architectural History

Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management (CRM) firm, is seeking a Senior Principal Investigator – History/Architectural History to join our History Architecture practice and support our successful transportation group in our Indianapolis, Indiana office. Expected salary range for this role is $65,000-$80,000. This role is full time, regular status, exempt position, but part time employment is also a possibility. Gray & Pape offers a hybrid work environment with built in flexibility for days in the office.

Summary of the Role:
The Senior Principal Investigator- History/Architectural History is responsible for the management of historical research and architectural documentation projects, supervising, and/ or conducting historical research and narrative writing for compliance reports, and providing historic preservation services to the satisfaction of client requirements and in accordance with professional and company standards and ethics. The Senior Principal Investigator- History/Architectural History is responsible for all aspects of the fieldwork, report content, and preparation, National Register evaluation recommendations, preliminary evaluations of project effects, and cultural resource management recommendations. This role is also responsible for ensuring that all other project personnel have sufficient experience to perform their assigned duties and may be involved in the development, maintenance and management of market sectors and clients and may also be responsible for the supervision of history/architecture staff at the regional or branch office level.

Required Qualifications
1. MA/MS, Architectural History, or related field/discipline plus capabilities in architectural history as demonstrated through education, scholarly, professional, or volunteer work.
2. 10 years of CRM consulting experience managing projects and all tasks within the project.
3. 7 years of CRM transportation experience working with multiple state departments of transportation within their project development processes and with the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA).
a. Understanding of various facets of transportation projects and demonstrated ability and success to guide and coordinate with project groups - engineers, designers, construction, environmental, and other cultural resources management disciplines.
4. Mastery of the National Register of Historic Places evaluation criteria and the legal framework of CRM and specifically, its application to transportation projects including but not limited to:
a. Identifying, interacting, and working with consulting parties and stakeholders
i. Experience in tribal consultation with FHWA as the lead agency
ii. Experience with local, state, and federal stakeholders, as well as consultants and contractors
b. Successfully lead and oversee all aspects of cultural resources regulatory compliance (Section 106 and 4f, NEPA) on transportation projects:
i. Area of potential effects; preparation/distribution of early coordination letters; identification of historic properties; NRHP eligibility determinations; assessment/resolution of effects; issue effect findings/compiling 800.11(d) documentation; post review discoveries; Programmatic Agreements, Memoranda of Agreements/Understanding; historic bridge programs; public hearings.
5. Experience directing the preparation of cultural resource reports and substantial client deliverables.
6. Working knowledge of GIS/GPS mapping.
7. Experience providing Section 106 consultation support to clients and authoring agreement documents.
8. Demonstrable skill in managing client relationships.
9. Demonstrable skill in clear, effective, and professional oral and written communication.
10. Display curiosity and respect for others’ perspectives and strengths.
11. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Travel is project-dependent with an expectation of travel outside the local area and for multiple days. Some projects may require extended travel.
