The following is a summary of public archaeology resources compiled by 2026 SHA PEIC members. Instead of reinventing the wheel and designing new public archaeology resources, we want to highlight some excellent resources already available.
Various resources from the Florida Public Archaeology Network: This webpage includes lessons for students of all ages on artifacts, shipwrecks, and Timucuan technology, as well as introductions to topics like NAGPRA.
Lesson plans from Archaeology in the Community: Archaeology in the Community offers lesson plans and videos on topics from bison bones to ancient Nubia.
Various resources from the South Carolina Heritage Trust: These resources are housed across multiple webpages and include children’s books, lesson plans, and educational StoryMaps.
“Digital Data Stories” from the Alexandria Archive Institute: This webpage provides a combined educational experience in both archaeology and digital data.
Educational materials from Crow Canyon Archaeological Center: Crow Canyon Archaeological Center offers two classroom modules, as well as videos and access to teaching collections.
“Archaeology for Kids” from the National Park Service: This webpage includes information about what archaeologists do in both the lab and the field.
Various resources from the Council for British Archaeology: The Council for British Archaeology offers the Young Archaeologists’ Club, Dig School, and a YouTube channel.
Lesson plans from the Archaeological Institute of America: Lesson plans are available for grades K-12 on a variety of archaeological topics, including stratigraphy and garbology.
Various resources from the American Museum of Natural History: This comprehensive webpage includes cartoons, digital games, and instructions for hands-on experiences for kids.
Educational materials from Project Archaeology: This webpage has resources for educators to teach archaeology in grades three through five.
Various resources from the Society for American Archaeology: This webpage offers educational materials for grades K-12, as well as secondary education resources.
