Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology
The department of Sociology and Anthropology is seeking one full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology for the period August 16, 2023, to December 31, 2026. This is a 9-month academic year contract for 8 semesters and does not include summer employment. We are seeking a candidate to teach both undergraduate and graduate classes with an emphasis on historical archaeology. This is a 100% teaching position and the teaching load for a full-time visiting instructor is 4 classes per semester (courses with enrollments greater than 90 students count as two).
The ideal candidate would be able to teach methods in digital archaeology and current topics in historical archaeology. Strengths in any of the following are a plus: Latin American Studies, Native American Studies, Food Studies. The appointee will have the resources of a large archaeology lab with historical artifact-type collections, a reference library, and laboratory equipment.

Required Qualifications
1. PhD in Anthropology or ABD
2. Experience as the teacher of record for two or more college-level anthropology courses.
3. The ability to teach the following required courses:
- Archaeology Theory (ANT 486/386)
- People and Food (ANT 105)
- Analysis of Archaeological Materials (ANT 401/ANT 392)
- Research Design in Anthropology (ANT 460)
4. Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
Desired Qualifications
Ability to teach additional topical classes such as:
- ANT 375 Landscape Archaeology (intensive digital archaeology applications)
- ANT 275 Foodways
- ANT 102: Human Origins
- ANT 280 (online) Cherokee Culture to 1830
- ANT 274 Principles of Archaeology
- Additional topical electives relative to the candidate’s experience and expertise
