Job Description
Chronicle Heritage is seeking a professionally qualified and experienced architectural historian for a full-time position in Pennsylvania. This position will involve providing technical expertise and leadership to guide a variety of projects through the environmental and historic preservation compliance processes for our clients in the private and public sectors. The successful candidate will serve as key staff at for the West Chester, PA office, and as part of our growing national historic resources program. This position will also include project management and some staff management
Hire Type: Full-time (salary)
Schedule: 40 hours, Monday–Friday, normal business hours
Location: Hybrid / West Chester, Pennsylvania
Job Duties:
- Work with our team of cultural resource professionals to plan, organize, and manage historic resource surveys and other investigative work related to the identification, evaluation, and assessment of effects to historic properties
- Supervise project architectural historians and principal investigators
- Review technical reports and associated documentation and perform final QA/QC before client submittal
- Develop proposals and cost estimates and provide support to clients during the scoping phases of projects
- Regularly communicate with clients to keep them informed of project progress, project schedule review, and ensure all project needs are being addressed in a timely manner and within budget
- Coordinate project review with state and federal agencies, including various State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor\'s degree in historic preservation or a closely related field, such as history, architectural history, or public history
- Meet or exceeds the SOI Standards for Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61)
- 5+ years of experience conducting historical research, completing historical resource surveys, and evaluating the historic and architectural significance of properties under National Register of Historic Places criteria, and preparing effects assessments
- Proficient understanding of local, state, and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act, and the Pennsylvania History Code, 37 PA. Cons. Stat. Section 500 et seq. (1988)
- Project management experience
- Ability to prepare technical and cost proposals
- Some travel throughout Northeast territory
Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree in historic preservation or a closely related field, such as history, architectural history, or public history
- Preference given to candidates with knowledge of historic mid-Atlantic and Pennsylvania architectural forms, styles, and trends, and the various historical property types and characteristic of the region
- Experience with facilitating consulting party coordination and preparing MOAs
- Experience with preparing architectural drawings and documentation
- Exceptional research, technical writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- GIS experience
- Experience working with PHMC and other regional SHPOs including NJ HPO and DESHPO.
