Job Description

Position Description: The Public Archaeology Coordinator is responsible for working independently to manage the day-to-day operations of the FPAN region under guidance from the FPAN Director. This includes the development, promotion, and implementation of public archaeology programming and materials within the East Central region (Brevard, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and St. Lucie counties). This position will coordinate with professional/public partners, manage internships and volunteer programs, and address inquiries from the public. Other duties include: maintain a social media and web presence; coordinate with the Florida Division of Historic Resources to implement/support programming; assist local governments with archaeological resources; and advocate for the state’s cultural resources in a variety of ways. Scientific diving, photogrammetry, 3D printing, and GIS experience preferred.

Essential Duties Summary

Principal Job Responsibilities:
• Responsible for development and management of FPAN outreach programming; including research, design, and implementation.
• Work independently to establish and maintain collaborative relationships and networking opportunities between the regional center and the public. This includes, but is not limited to: local/county/state government; heritage/cultural professionals; educational institutions; public volunteers, and civic groups.
• Assess and document archaeological resources.
• Track and interpret quantitative measures of outreach efforts to direct future programming and demonstrate programming value.
• Coordinate publicity and awareness of FPAN’s mission and events through traditional and social media.
• Work to utilize new technologies and techniques to create innovative outreach tools.
• Advocate for and promote FPAN’s mission at public events, civic engagements, and other outreach opportunities.
• Network with national and international cultural institutions to keep abreast of trends in archaeology and archaeology education. This may take the form of sitting on committees and presenting research at conferences.
• Work with FPAN staff across entire state to implement and standardize programming and advocacy.
• Develop, coordinate, and supervise internship and volunteer programs.

Required Qualifications

Requirements:
• Master’s degree in anthropology or related field with three years or more of work experience.
• Must meet the Secretary of the Interior qualifications as an archaeologist and/or be listed on the Registry of Professional Archaeologists. Comparable experience may also be accepted in lieu of SOI/RPA requirements.
• Follows the ethical/legal standards of the Society of American Archaeology, Flagler College, and state/federal laws.
• National Interpretation Association certification as Certified Interpretive Guide.
• Ability to travel frequently within the region with occasional overnight travel and out of state travel approved by Executive Director.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands

• Have ability to carry up to 25lbs of equipment and access multi-story buildings and outdoor sites.
