Lecturer – Department of Sociology and Anthropology

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Lecturer in Anthropology. This position is located on the Armstrong campus in Savannah, GA.

In January 2017, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to consolidate Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University. The new, 27,000-student university will be named Georgia Southern University with campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hinesville, GA. Within this setting, the growing four-field anthropology program within the Sociology and Anthropology department includes faculty on both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses who are actively engaged in teaching, research, service, and public outreach. The program includes teaching and research laboratory spaces totaling approximately 8,000 square feet across the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses. The Department also administers the R M Bogan Archaeological Repository in Statesboro, GA.

Position Description: Reporting to the department chair, the Lecturer requires a 4/4 teaching load with service obligations to include public outreach. This individual will teach lower-division core courses including four-field Introduction to Anthropology and Global Perspectives in Anthropology: Peoples of the World, as well as upper-division undergraduate courses, primarily within the field of Archaeology. The position is an academic 9 month, non-tenure track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
• Earned PhD in Anthropology, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Anthropology, OR an MA in Anthropology with at least three years of university teaching experience by July 1, 2018.
• Ability to teach four-field Introduction to Anthropology.
• Ability to teach a cultural anthropology oriented global perspectives core course.
• Ability to teach upper-division archaeology courses.
• Ability to conduct public outreach / public archaeology in and around Savannah, Georgia, through directorship and further development of the Digging Savannah program (https://diggingsavannah.org/).
• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Archaeology focus in the United States Southeast Region.
• Experience directing students and volunteers in archaeology field and laboratory projects.
• Ability to teach one or more specialty topics in archaeology (e.g. public archaeology, shallow geophysics, lithic analysis, archaeobotany, geoarchaeology, urban archaeology, underwater archaeology, etc.).
• Experience developing online courses, or courses with substantial online components.
• Experience obtaining external funding.
