  • Compensation:
    • Field technician hourly pay ranges from $17.50–$21.00 depending on qualifications and experience.

 Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • The Field Technician position is under the direction of Staff Archaeologists and Principal Investigators.
  • Project types may include archaeological monitoring, survey, evaluation, and data recovery projects, including projects that will require stays away from home that vary from overnight to multiple weeks depending on the project.
  • Depending on experience and qualifications, duties may range from performing pedestrian and shovel testing reconnaissance, assisting in activities associated with the excavation of sites and features, screening, backfilling excavated areas, and cleaning/packaging/labeling archaeological artifacts, to being assigned phase I (inventory-level survey) and, to a lesser extent, phase II (National Register evaluation) projects.  This may involve (1) conducting pre-field research, (2) directing fieldwork and laboratory analyses, and (3) preparing technical reports.

Qualifications:

  • One year of experience as a field technician, the completion of an archaeological field school, and certification as a Registered Archaeologist (or meet the requirements) are preferred, but if one has the ability and motivation to learn, and is a team player, inexperienced candidates may be considered.
  • Ability to work in a variety of field conditions, and to navigate efficiently in remote areas;
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, lift heavy objects, work while standing, and do general manual labor such as digging, sifting, and moving wheel barrows of dirt from one location to another.
  • Must be able to walk/hike in rough and/or sloped terrain in variable weather conditions, be physically fit, and be able to work ten to twelve hour days (or longer if necessary) in a variety of conditions.
  • Must possess problem solving skills to identify problems, develop, evaluate options, and implement solutions, must be resourceful and able to complete tasks in the most effective manner, must be able to follow directions and work independently as needed.
