DEPARTMENT HEAD, Sociology and Anthropology


The Department of Sociology and Anthropology, an academic unit within the College of
Humanities and Public Affairs at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, is accepting
applications for Department Head, who will sustain and enhance the department's established programs in Sociology and Anthropology. The starting date for this position will be July 1, 2022.

The department offers both BA and BS degrees in Sociology, with an emphasis on Public
Sociology. It also offers BA and BS degrees in Anthropology. It currently has about 125
Anthropology majors and minors, and 185 Sociology majors and minors. There are seven
faculty members in sociology, and seven in anthropology. The departmental programs are
committed to encouraging engaged and hands-on experiences, such as service learning, study away, field schools, internships, and directed research projects. Faculty members and students in the department collaborate with the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), a university affiliated research institute that conducts archaeological field work and other cultural resource management projects on a contractual basis.

Minimal requirements for the position are: a PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline; successful administrative experience in a baccalaureate-granting institution; and a record of teaching, research, and service that meets or exceeds criteria for tenure and the rank of full professor in the department. The field of specialization is open, but applicants should be supportive of Public Sociology and Applied Anthropology.

The Head will support the Sociology and Anthropology Department in its promotion of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Administrative duties include, but are not limited to: overseeing faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; program and curriculum development; student advising; budgeting; class scheduling; and general supervision of teaching, research, and service activities of the unit. The typical teaching load for the Head is one course per semester. The successful candidate must be committed to working with diverse student, faculty, and community populations and must share the department's commitment to community engagement and the public affairs mission of the university.
