Cultural Resources Lead – Reno, NV office (Archaeology)
Overview
SWCA Environmental Consultants has an exciting opportunity for a Cultural Resources Lead for our Reno, NV office. The Cultural Resources Lead is responsible for providing highly effective, dynamic management and leadership within the Nevada Cultural Resources Program by managing staff, projects, and clients. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of developing new business, managing large-scale projects, meeting financial goals, and mentoring others to do the same. The Cultural Resources Lead reports to the Nevada Senior Cultural Resources Team Lead and will work closely with other Nevada Team Leads and Office Leads, the Nevada Director, and other regional leadership as appropriate. There may also be some work in California. This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. Salary will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities
The Cultural Resources Lead for Reno will manage current projects and contracts while participating in the development of a forward-looking plan for the team. The successful candidate will be contributing to the following:
Staff leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and provide project specific direction to cultural resources project managers, technical staff, and field personnel.
- Build collaborative relationships across offices/geographies to share resources and expertise.
- Advise the Director on staff supervision, advancement, and course correction, as needed.
- Provide general support to the team relating to safety, equipment, subject matter resources, training opportunities, regulatory and research updates, etc.
- Take a leading role in managing the schedule for the cultural resources group, ensuring adequate coverage of project needs, ensuring appropriate assignments of staff to specific tasks, and identifying staffing shortfalls so that additional support can be sought either through subconsultants, staff from other offices, or hiring.
- Serve as the lead hiring manager for project- and staff-level positions. Take a leading role in identify staffing needs, screening job candidates, conducting interviews, and making hiring recommendations to the Director.
- Ensure team compliance with performance management and training requirements; support the Director in tracking progress and follow-up with individual supervisors and staff members.
- Drive engagement for the team, recognize strong performance and implement approaches that motivate high levels of performance and retention.
Client/Project leadership
- Understand SWCA's business model and basic financials and keep them 'top of mind' when making decisions about a client/project situation.
- Manage the performance of individual projects and contracts and effectively coordinate with clients and agencies to produce technically excellent work that is on time and on budget. Coach team members to do the same.
- Identify and mitigate project challenges to avoid overruns and ensure profitability. Coach team members to do the same.
Technical leadership
- Direct field and laboratory teams and prepare and review cultural resources reports and other related documents, providing direction and quality assurance.
- Develop efficient workflows for project execution to maximize efficiencies while also ensuring continuous QA/QC, in collaboration with Principal Investigators and the Director.
- Develop recommendations for mitigation measures, monitoring, and permitting specific to cultural resources, in collaboration with Principal Investigators and the Director.
- Maintains SWCA's high standard of quality control and takes initiative to resolve problems and create improved procedures
- Participate in SWCA's Innovation initiative by considering new technology or other methods to improve efficiency and improve our company's competitive advantage.
- Help build SWCA professional reputation and client base in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and associated services
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience managing CRM projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
- Experience with NHPA Section 106 and NEPA.
- Experience and aptitude with all aspects of cultural resources projects, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
- Drives compliance of safety policies and reporting requirements to ensure overall team safety.
- Excellent technical writing skills with a record of completing technical reports in a timely fashion. Must include experience with primary report authorship in a CRM context for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies
- A track record of business development including client development, marketing, and proposal preparation
- Adapt rapidly to changes in project needs, agency requests, etc. and be able to work independently and collaborate with a variety of colleagues, clients, and agency representatives
- Individual must be highly driven to succeed, help build the Nevada cultural business, and learn
Preferred or Helpful:
- Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or a related field is helpful.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
- Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology, anthropology, or historic preservation or related field
- Hold or qualify for Nevada BLM permits for the Northern and Western regions of the state.
- Certification as California SHPO Qualified Archaelologist (or able to become qualified) is helpful.
