Overview

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an individual with a flexible schedule for a part-time, on-call, Assistant Project Archaeologist position based out of our Pasadena, California office. This position can be entirely remote, though prior archaeological experience in California is required.

Working closely with Project Managers across various disciplines, the successful candidate will answer after-hours inbound emergency calls on behalf of our client, perform desktop analysis, assist with fieldwork coordination, communicate directly with clients and their subcontractors, and work alongside a team of Project Managers. Position will be hourly and eligible for overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts background research for archaeological studies.
  • Ensures that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are ready for fieldwork.
  • Coordinates with client personnel, subconsultants, and Native American monitors, as needed, to arrange fieldwork and facilitate projects.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project Manager to ensure that a project’s timetable is met.
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports preferred.
  • Familiarity with utilities operation and maintenance (O&M) work and coordinating with construction personnel.
  • Experience with implementing the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 processes is preferred.
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Ability to conduct occasional fieldwork as needed. Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Qualified for listing on the California statewide Bureau of Land Management permit preferred.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Availability and willingness to work weekends and overnight is required.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required
