Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track Position, at Rice University and Center for African and African American Studies

The Department of Anthropology at Rice University (Houston, Texas), in partnership with the Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS), invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin July 1, 2024. We seek an archaeologist focused on the African Diaspora in the Americas (North, Central, or South America) including the Caribbean. Areas of expertise may include: plantation societies, or other contexts of enslavement; maroon societies; the material culture of enslavement and/or post-emancipation life; more historically recent African diasporic communities; Caribbean Studies; and community-engaged and public archaeology. In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate will teach three undergraduate and graduate courses in a normal academic year.

 

All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field by the time of the appointment.  The application deadline is October 15, 2023.  A complete application must include a cover letter outlining the candidate’s research, teaching trajectory and future plans; a curriculum vitae; two writing samples; and contact information for three references.
