Assistant Archaeologist
Description: The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy is a not-for-profit 501(C)(3) organization responsible for the stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of Palmetto Bluff, a residential and resort community in coastal South Carolina. The assistant archaeologist will support the lead archaeologist at Palmetto Bluff in completing reports, conducting archaeological work, providing educational programs, and carrying out administrative and other functions of the Conservancy. The ideal candidate has experience in cultural resource management, research, and community outreach initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting with writing technical reports for federal and state agencies
- Conducting historical research
- Assisting with artifact analysis
- Preparing and delivering materials for curation
- Writing articles, brochures, and other materials
- Providing presentations and interpretative programming
- Assisting with planning, supervising, and conducting archaeological work
- Performing administrative work as needed
- Assisting Conservancy staff with other work, including but not limited to, fundraising and special events
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or history
- At least two years of experience in archaeological fieldwork and in cultural resource management or a master’s degree in history
- Strong writing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Experience in providing programming for the public
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or history
- Supervisory archaeological field experience
- Background in the archaeology and history of the Southeast
- Experience in program development for public outreach
