Duties
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
This position will be based out of Boulder City, Nevada where the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters is located. It is a 20-minute drive from the city of Henderson which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million acres in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, in the transition of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. It hosts 7.5 million visitors per year. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for recreation abound.
Major Duties include but are not limited to:
- Design, implement, and lead archeological inventory projects designed to identify the presence or absence of cultural deposits and their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
- Maintain and update archeological records, data, and databases; gather and organize records such as documents, maps, photographs, excavation records, for compilation into archeological inventory reports and information systems for data analysis and permanent record keeping and analysis.
- Collect, analyze, and maintain a variety of GIS data, GIS database systems, cultural resources data information management systems, remote sensing, georeferencing information, for the purposes of research, reporting, planning, documentation, and archival and record management requirements.
- Apply regional precontact and historic archeological context to analyze and process archeological data and material resulting from fieldwork.
