Archaeological Laboratory Analyst (Temporary)

This is for a Part-time temporary position.

The Archaeological Analyst is a temporary (not to exceed 1,500 hours), part-time (32 hours/week), non-exempt-status position, working within the Department of Historic Preservation and Collections under the direct oversight of the Curator of Preservation Collections and indirect oversight of the Director of Historic Preservation. The Archaeological Analyst is charged with assisting and supporting the Curator of Preservation Collections in processing the archaeological collection for assigned projects and managing lab facilities.  Starting rate is $21.50/hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Catalogue artifacts from ongoing excavations
Conduct the full range of artifact processing activities including washing, sorting, and labelling artifacts
Assist the Curator of Preservation Collections in:
Managing and training volunteers in conducting the full range of standard archaeological lab procedures
Designing exhibits and preparing for internal and external loans
Conduct historical research, artifact analyses and contributes to preparing archaeological reports, articles, and presentations
Interpret Mount Vernon material culture to the public and conduct tours of the archaeology lab
Conduct and supervise specialized processing including water screening and flotation
Undertake other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
B.A. in Historical Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, History or closely related field required; M.A. preferred.
Completion of an archaeological field school; additional work in historical archaeology preferred.
Knowledge of archaeological methods and theory including historical archaeology of the English colonial world, artifact analyses, database functionality, field methodologies, collections management issues and public interpretation.
At least two years of experience working in the field of historical archaeology, at least 6 months of which spent working in an archaeological laboratory process and analyzing artifacts, preferred.
Experience and demonstrated skills in cataloguing the range of historic and prehistoric artifacts found in the Mid-Atlantic, in particular those from Colonial British and federalist period sites, into collection management systems/databases. Proficiency with the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (DAACS) and familiarity with Proficio preferred.
Excellent communication skills, reflected in strong and effective writing and speaking, as well as excellent diplomatic skills.
Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work beyond a normal work day.
Ability to successfully complete a security background check.
