The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking an Archaeological and Museum Collections Manager to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. Under general supervision of Park Authority Archaeology and Collections Branch, performs advanced, specialized cultural resource duties, including but not limited to the technical identification, evaluation, and documentation of museum and archaeological collections; responsible for managing archaeological and museum collections and curatorial tasks, as well as staff. Serves as subject matter expert for museum and archaeological collections. Curates and manages archaeological and museum collections and associated documentation. Provides information to the public regarding archaeological and museum collections issues; and provides technical information concerning archaeological and museum collections matters to county agencies, boards, and commissions.

- Identifies, surveys, researches, and records cultural and heritage resources to make recommendations related to their study, preservation, planning and or development projects;
- Researches, interprets, and records information related to the county's museum collections for the purpose of making recommendations on the preservation and interpretation of those collections;
- Reviews and assists in developing revisions to the County's Heritage Resources Plan, Comprehensive Plan, and the Park Authority's Cultural Resource Management Plan;
- Coordinates museum exhibit production activities;
- Identifies and directs museum care for objects or collections within the collections facility, and coordinates this care with county staff as appropriate;
- Maintains museum collections database both for all museum collections items, including accession files, photographic documentation, conditions assessments, and other curatorial information;
- Researches and reports on issues related to an area of expertise;
- Provides information to the public related through reports, publications, lectures, and meetings;
- Provides professional counsel and administrative support to boards and commissions such as the Board of Supervisors, the Park Authority Board, the Planning Commission, the Architectural Review Board, and the History Commission;
- Works with other county staff on team projects when expertise in a specialty area is required;
- Assists in the establishment and revision of agency and division policies and procedures when expertise in a specialty area is required;
- Develops Requests for Proposal, participates in selection of contractors, and monitors their work;
- Represents the agency and county at meetings with boards, authorities, and commissions;
- Recruits, trains, and schedules staff and volunteers;
- Plans, directs, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

- Expert level knowledge of archaeology, historic preservation, architectural history, or museum curation;
- Expert level knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations, codes, and ordinances related to cultural resources in Virginia, which may include the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the Virginia Antiquities Act;
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of a specialty area such as archaeology, museum collections, or historic preservation, and the ability to effectively apply them;
- Knowledge of laboratory and or field safety procedures;
- Knowledge of historic classification methodologies;
- Ability to train volunteers in the work methods of the specialty area to which assigned, and to monitor their work;
- Ability to analyze and manage complex datasets using databases, spreadsheets, and statistical programs;
- Ability to operate and maintain field equipment used in historic resource survey or curatorial facility;
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively to a wide range of audiences;
- Ability to set priorities and manage time efficiently.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master's degree in history, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, historical architecture, archaeology, museum studies or other closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in specialized field such as such as archaeology, historic preservation, architectural history, museum collections, of which two years must have been in a supervisory role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree or PhD in anthropology, archaeology, history, historic preservation, museum studies, material culture, or a closely related field with 5 or more years’ experience in directing or supervising the care of museum and archaeological collections at the equivalent of an HRS II.
- Five or more years supervising or working with archaeological and museum collections projects in the Middle Atlantic region.
- Five or more years or more years of experience using computer applications as they pertain to archaeological and museum collections.
- Five or more years working with public outreach as it pertains to archaeology/material culture/museum and archaeological collection .
- Five or more years’ experience with federal, state, and local historic preservation legislation and collections guidelines.
- Knowledge of guidelines, regulations, and best practices regarding museum and archeological collections.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
