Robert Paynter (1949-2023)

Dear SHA Members,

Robert Paynter passed away on April 30, 2023, after a long illness. Bob was a full Professor at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. His career focused on New England Historical Archaeology, and many of his publications address issues like the rise and impact of industrial capitalism. He worked tirelessly with the history program at U Mass to save, preserve and interpret the WEB DuBois homestead. Below is a link to a short bio by the History Dept. at U Mass. Many of his students now practice in academia, CRM, and historic preservation.
