Paul Mullins to be Awarded a J.C. Harrington Medal at SHA 2024 Conference
Dear SHA Members,
The SHA Awards Committee has elected to award the late Paul Mullins a J.C. Harrington Medal at the 2024 Conference in Oakland. The recipient of the SHA’s first Cotter Award in 2000, Mullin’s scholarship left an indelible legacy in four books authored, three volumes edited, and approximately 70 peer-reviewed articles or book chapters. He was a leading figure in African Diaspora archaeology, who worked locally in Indianapolis to document the legacy of the African American Near Westside and Ransom Place neighborhoods that were displaced by the expansion of the IUPUI campus. In addition, he also did extensive work to expand SHA’s international presence, collaborating for many years with the University of Oulu (Finland) as well as with many colleagues throughout Europe. He served the SHA as Associate Editor, President-Elect, President, and Chair of the Awards Committee. His Harrington Award presentation will occur during the Plenary Session Awards Ceremony.
Sincerely,
J.W. Joseph
Chair, SHA Awards Committee
