In conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestowne, the SHA Board has selected Williamsburg, Virginia as the site for the 40th Annual Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology, which will be held January 9-14, 2007. This will be the first major event in a year of celebration and commemoration of this historic venue.

The theme "Old World/New World: Culture in Transformation" encourages conference presentations focusing on cosmopolitan concepts expressed in hinterland environments. It speaks to the impact of immigrant culture on the transformation of native peoples and, conversely, the natives on the immigrants. "Old World/New World" also encompasses comparative studies exploring life in Western Europe, 15th through 19th centuries, with its provincial American counterparts. This broad concept asks researchers to look at their sites not in isolation, but as a part of an evolving Atlantic world community. It also encourages sessions on regional collaboration.
